Trump-Putin summit cancelled (X)
Trump-Putin summit postponed: The proposed summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been postponed for now. Moscow has refused to accept demands for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. A White House official confirmed on Tuesday that the two leaders have no plans to meet in the near future.
Last week, Trump announced that he and Putin would meet in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, to make efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. The last meeting of the two leaders was in Alaska in August. However, to prepare for this meeting, the meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, which was to be held in Budapest on Thursday, has also been cancelled.
“I want to officially confirm that Russia has not changed its position from the understanding reached during the Alaska summit,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, speaking to reporters in Moscow. He said that more important than the date and place of the next summit is that the understanding reached in Alaska be implemented.
Russia says that for lasting peace, it is necessary to keep Ukraine a non-nuclear state and not include it in the US-led NATO alliance. Putin has said many times before that he is ready for peace talks, but for this the root causes of the war have to be resolved first.
According to reports, on Tuesday Russia launched a massive attack in Ukraine. The attack killed four people and left thousands of homes without power in the Chernihiv region. Local officials said that seven people were also injured in the drone attacks. It is believed that these Russian attacks are an attempt to weaken Ukraine's energy system before winter.
